SDG 13 Climate Action

SDG 13 Climate Action
SWR Supports the Sustainable Development Goals.

SDG 13 Climate Action is a continuation of my series  on the SDGs.

“The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) define global sustainable development priorities and aspirations for 2030 and seek to mobilize global efforts around a common set of goals and targets. The SDGs call for worldwide action among governments, business and civil society to end poverty and create a life of dignity and opportunity for all, within the boundaries of the planet.”

SDG 13 Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

  • Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
  • Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
  • Implement the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to a goal of mobilizing jointly $100 billion annually by 2020 from all sources to address the needs of developing countries in the context of meaningful mitigation actions and transparency on implementation and fully operationalize the Green Climate Fund through its capitalization as soon as possible
  • Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities

ANZ approaches SDG 13 Climate Action through a variety of activities with specific targets. In its 2017 Corporate Sustainability Review, the bank specifies its goal to fund by 2020 at least $15 billion low carbon and sustainable solution projects. In its operations, it sets targets for reducing its environmental impacts from operations such as carbon emissions, water consumption, and others.

CLP prioritized six SDGs that apply to their operations in its 2016 Sustainability Report. At this stage they state “We have begun discussions on potential metrics with the aim of delivering a set of SDG-relevant Sustainability Goals by 2018.” SDG 13 Climate Action tops its priority list.

Ericsson’s 2016 Sustainability Report details how it is involved in mangrove forest rehabilitation in support of SDG 13 Climate Action.
